The 10 most visited cities in the world
No, the most visited city in the world in 2017 was neither Rome, nor Paris, nor New York. Indeed, in 2018, tourism seems to have turned to Asia!
It is the Mastercard company which, for 10 years now, has launched the "Global Destination Cities Index" ranking each year. The latter is particularly interesting because it shows not only the most visited cities in the world, but also the average stay time and amount of spending. And some 162 cities have been combed through.
1. Bangkok
With 20.5 million international visitors, the Thai city has a small lead over the two European cities that follow it. On average, tourists stay 4.7 nights and spend $ 173 a day there.
2. London
An essential financial and tourist center, the British capital still continues to attract: 19.83 million international visitors, with an astonishingly long average stay of 5.8 nights and average daily expenses of 153 dollars. This last amount seems, on the other hand, curiously low, given the cost of living in London ...
3. Paris
The City of Light still seems to be a must-see but is still being thrown over by London. 17.44 million international tourists in 2017, for an average stay of 2.5 nights and an average amount of daily expenditure of… 301 dollars!
4. Dubai
The Middle East seems to be popular: 15.79 million tourists, 2.6 million more than in New York! Tourists stay 3.5 nights on average in Dubai and spend a real fortune every day: $ 537!
5. Singapore
Asia again and again: 13.91 million international tourists, an average stay of 4.3 nights and daily spending of $ 286 in Singapore.
6. New York
We expected to find the American city in very good place and finally, this sixth position is somewhat disappointing. The fact remains that every year, 13.13 million international visitors flock to it. They also stay there for a very long time: 8.3 nights, with $ 147 as the average daily spend.
7. Kuala Lumpur
The capital of Malaysia is a surprise in this ranking. 12.58 million tourists in 2017 who stayed there for 5.5 nights on average and spent $ 124 each day.
8. Tokyo
Japan was popular over the past year: 11.93 million international tourists, an average stay of 6.5 nights and an average of $ 154 spent each day.
9. Istanbul
The growth forecast for Turkey in 2018 is extremely promising! Last year, the city had already enjoyed good attendance: 10.7 million international tourists, for an average stay of 5.8 nights and daily expenses of 108 dollars. This makes Istanbul the cheapest city on this list!
10. Seoul
Another surprise in this ranking: South Korea is entering this top! It must be said that business visits are also very numerous. 9.54 million international visitors in 2017, an average stay of 4.2 nights and $ 181 as daily spending.
